THE FABRIC FOREST

Even though I live on the coast, I have been thinking a lot about trees lately, as I prepare for THE FABRIC FOREST workshop, coming up in October. It's important to explore different themes and subjects, even ones that may seem unrelated to my immediate surroundings. Trees, as a thing of beauty have always inspired, and now, I feel that while we may feel a sense of hopelessness with the current climate emergency, it is the perfect time to celebrate our woods, forests, and rainforests, as they play such a vital role in maintaining our ecosystems.

In this workshop, I will be teaching participants how to create their own textile landscapes, incorporating various fabrics, textures, and stitching, to bring the essence of a woodland to life.

how to make a quilt about trees

We will be exploring the distinct shapes and colours of trees and interpreting them in various ways. From the simple to more complex.

I am very aware that not everyone comes to a workshop with the same skill set, and that is why I provide patterns and inspirations for those that want to use them. It is always my aim to ensure that all have an enjoyable time while they learn.

I will be sharing my design processes and revealing some of the different ways I use my sketchbooks to aid the process of putting a landscape together.

I will also be showing you, how thinking about composition beforehand can help you to see the wood from the trees. 😊

A painted fabric kit will be provided in order to facilitate a shorter time putting the quilt together.

This will be used as backgrounds upon which we will explore layering with stencilling, stamping and applique to build up the design.

We will also look at different ways to stitch your pieces to add variety, texture and balance.

As this is a technique based workshop, you are free to create a number of sample pieces, or to head straight into one piece.

With the workshop approaching, my summer is being spent immersed in the creation of sample pieces, and I look forward to sharing them with the participants in October.
